Spiritual Thinking

by Rev. Thomas R. Mitchell

How spiritual is your thinking these days? Today many talk like this world we live in is everything, when comparatively, it’s nothing. You must remember that to be earthly minded is to be displeasing to God (Romans 8:8). Are your thoughts today spiritual or are your thoughts today carnal?

When people are earthly minded, the love of earthly things and activities dominates their minds. There is no love for spiritual things. Even "true" Christians can love the things of this world too much. That is when their spiritual life becomes unhealthy. Their peace begins to slip away. On the other hand, as a Christian, you may have spiritual life but you have no peace. Worst case scenario? To claim to be a Christian without any spiritual life or peace!

A mind that is truly spiritual and concerned with the things of God will bring forth spiritual fruit. Let me explain. Your mind, like a tree full of blossom, is full of thoughts. Many thoughts will come to nothing. Some will produce fruit - good or bad. The kind of thoughts you have will tell you whether you are spiritually minded or not. As a person thinks so is he (Prov. 23:7).

A mind controlled by new spiritual life will produce good spiritual fruit. As the quality of soil can be judged by how well the crops grow, so your mind can be judged by the way you think, particularly in times of stress. Do you panic, react and forget God? Or do you quite naturally turn to Him for the solution to every problem?

When a severe difficulty or tragedy suddenly occurs, many people then think about spiritual things. When their troubles are over, however, they forget about God. That is like relying on a hurricane to provide you with drinking water! How much better to rely upon a steady stream of fresh water daily. A true Spirit filled and Spirit led believer will be drinking from this steady stream of "living" water daily...not depending upon the hurricanes of life. Let’s press a little deeper into this subject. How for example can you tell if you are spiritually minded or not?

Here is one good way. Read Psalm 119. Observe how David expresses his love and his passion for the Word of God. Can you talk like him? When one can truly come to love the Word of God as David did, they can safely assume that they are spiritually minded. Why? Because the Word of God consumes them. The Word of God has permeated their very being. The "It is Writtens" are all they think about. When this place is reached in your life...you have truly become spiritually minded.

Think for a moment about the priorities of unbelievers. Their thoughts are caught up in the cares of this world. They focus upon careers, possessions, money, family, leisure and retirement... they think little or nothing of God. They are more concerned with the weekend TV movie or sports programming than they are with the things of God! We can all agree that the unbeliever is living a life of deception and ultimate disaster. Examine for a moment how much in line with their way of thinking that yours may be. This can be a very sobering examination provided you have a teachable heart. Some cannot see the forest for the trees nor their sins for the pleasure and comfort!

Let me ask you, do you deliberately give time to think upon things spiritual. Have you yet developed the self-discipline to meditate upon the things of God? Do you study His Word, reading back and forth, taking notes, studying a passage of Scripture until you are literally overjoyed and exhausted at the same time by the depth and the blessings of God’s Word? Do you ever read God’s Word and then simply sit back in awe at what you’ve just read? Do you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about God’s Word? Does your source of joy find its roots in the Word of God?

If you can answer yes to all of the above, it’s a good sign that you’re on the right track. If you answered no to all of the above, it’s a good sign that you’ve been derailed somewhere along your journey! You must not allow yourself to slip into a "comfort zone". You must press on ever deeper into the wisdom and understanding of God’s wonderful Word! Be diligent!

God has no doubt given you some sort of family, career, education, business or even a church. You may well be blessed with a good many material things, or perhaps not many at all. Whatever the situation, know that God promises to supply all of your needs. Also know that God has not blessed you with spiritual and physical blessings so that they might take the place of Him on the throne of your heart. It is so easy to slip in this regard. We get blessed and all of a sudden, if we are not very careful, the blessing becomes our consuming thought as opposed to God Himself who has blessed us. This is truly a distortion of our priorities and a very common trap for us all.

The good news? Quite simple. Think upon the things of God and grow. Give Him thanks for ALL things. Crucify your selfish carnality and embrace the Words and Spirit of Jesus Christ! You’ll grow, you’ll glow and you’ll truly know...Jesus is alive!!!
